When it comes to living a long and healthy life, there are two important ingredients: diet and exercise. While some believe that they are inseparable, nothing could be further from the truth. To be totally honest, it is possible to shed pounds by dieting alone. It is difficult but possible. It is also possible to be physically fit and still have a few extra pounds. At the same time if we are not providing our bodies with the tools it requires to create muscle it does not matter how many weights we lift.

Look in the mirror, try on your tight slacks, and measure your waistline. Measure your success by how you feel after climbing a flight of stairs not by the scales.

This means that if you want to have a small ‘cheat’ during your day, you can make up for it by burning a few more calories than normal in the evening. This is not something that should happen often but an occasional occurrence is not going to make or break your diet.

If you are one of the many millions of people that suffer from bruising easily and you haven’t yet been able to find anything to help alleviate the problem, you may well be interested to know that taking up rollerblading could be the answer that you are looking for.  Yes, we may at first think that this sounds contradictory; after all taking frequent tumbles is exactly the sort of thing that we are looking to avoid.  It’s precisely that sort of thing that causes bruising in the first place.  However, while it is true that we may sport a few bruises while we learn to stay on our feet, once we have gained the knack, that is when the benefits can begin to realize themselves.

Bruising more easily is a phenomenon that accompanies our advancing years, and many people become quite worried as they age, wondering if the bruises are a symptom of a more serious underlying problem.  The truth of the matter is that bruising is caused by the rupturing of the tiny blood vessels just beneath the surface of your skin, and unless you are a hemophiliac, it is not a life threatening condition; but bruises do look dreadful.  We become more susceptible to sustaining bruises more easily as we grow older because of two things.  Firstly the walls of the capillary blood vessels thin with age, and secondly our skin loses much of its elasticity and resilience because our body slows its production of collagen.  The combination of these two events means that our tendency to experience easy bruising will escalate.

The more easily we tend to bruise, the more bruising our skin may seem to display.  This is simply because it takes so little to cause the bruising in the first place; in fact so little, that the event that brought about the bruise went totally unnoticed.  The result is that we try to avoid bumping into objects,  because we know how easily we bruise; but most of the event causes still go unnoticed.

For most people, easy bruising is a curse.  Bruises are not only ugly and unsightly, but it can become quite exasperating having to constantly answer people’s queries about how our bruising occurred in the first place.  If this sounds familiar, then it is time that we tried to do something about it, and taking up rollerblading may be just what we need.

Rollerblading is a relatively recent passtime.  It is a variation of ordinary roller skating that is becoming more and more popular.  The best way to describe it is as a cross of roller skating with ice skating.  Rollerblades still have wheels similar to roller skates, albeit thinner, but they are formatted in a straight line just like ice skating blades.  The great thing about rollerblading is that (a) it’s a great way of getting around, and, (b) it’s a great form of cardiovascular exercise.

Cardiovascular exercise is so called because it works the heart and lungs.  A regular program of some sort of cardio exercise, (like rollerblading), means that our heart and lungs will be pumping more blood through the capillary blood vessels, helping to strengthen them and keeping them more supple and elastic.  This will of course mean that our blood vessels stay more durable and are that much harder to rupture, especially with only light bumps and bangs.

We don’t have to rush out and purchase a pair of rollerblades right away.  If we’re a little unsure, we can always rent a pair from our local rollerblading rink and give it a try.  If you enjoy the experience, (and I am sure you will), we can then think about buying ourselves a pair.
